Why it matters

Companies would be required to keep a months-long log of where your phone goes and who you contact — even if you are under no suspicion. (Committee cut the maximum from a year to six months, but security experts say even that is not justified.)

The government could secretly order companies to weaken the encryption that protects your private messages. A back door built for the government is a back door criminals and foreign hackers go looking for too.
